projects: London Docklands Light Rail

Aluminium Luminaires

An extensive upgrade and extension to the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) in London was completed in time for the London 2012 Olympic Games. Austube custom designed and manufactured a high performance, robust lighting system specifically for station platforms along this rail system. Long runs of extruded aluminium luminaires were customised to include cameras, speakers and data cables in addition to providing high levels of illumination for the platforms. Importantly the luminaires also feature a high degree of dust and moisture protection.Other site considerations incorporated during the design were the exposure of the lighting system to significant changes in temperature and the need for a custom mounting solution. Extremes of temperature cause all the structural elements of the stations to expand and contract at different rates. This Austube lighting system includes design features which enable it to tolerate these movements without incident. Customised mounting brackets and fixings were also included.

Pierlite UK were involved in this project from the outset, and worked closely with Austube and the client to develop a lighting solution which met all the requirements of this project.
